The intestinal microbiome is the entirety of all microorganisms that colonize the intestine. A balanced ratio of the intestinal bacteria is essential for human health. Because, as numerous studies have shown, an imbalance in the gut microbiome is associated with various diseases. These include the metabolic syndrome, diabetes, inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, colon cancer, calcium oxalate urinary stones, cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and neurological disorders.
This so-called next-generation sequencing method for the detection of dysbiosis has so far only been used in the research area. It encompasses the molecular genetic analysis of the entire bacterial intestinal microbiome and revolutionized diagnostics, since conventional stool diagnostics has so far been able to identify only a limited area of the existing intestinal germs. Furthermore, the effects of individual highly complex microbiota on colonization resistance, digestive processes, absorption of nutrients and vitamins as well as on immunity can be assessed more precisely.
The analysis even detects anaerobic bacteria that cannot be cultured. The standard of microbiological stool diagnostics in the 20th century was based primarily on a cultural system based on nutrient media and subsequent enzymatic differentiation. However, the least of the anaerobic bacteria (approx. 99% of the intestinal bacteria) grow with the cultural methods. In recent years, the methods of investigation have developed rapidly. In modern laboratories, the identification of the bacteria from the plant on nutrient media is mostly carried out using mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF = Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight) or directly from the material used using molecular biological methods (PCR = Polymerase Chain Reaction) . The disadvantage, however, is that PCR is a very selective and costly technology.
The microbiome data and their expertise can be updated and expanded at regular intervals in the future, so that new findings are reflected in the findings.
The molecular genetic investigation includes the
- Analysis of the biodiversity of the intestinal microbiome (diversity)
- Statement about bacterial dysbiosis
- Enterotype entry
- Frequency distribution of the most important bacterial strains
- Determination of the firmicutes / bacteroidetes ratio
- Assessment of mucosal protective flora
- Analysis of risk factors for dysbiosis-related diseases
