It seems that with the end of self-willed April, we can finally welcome the more gentle May. Did you also notice it? Wherever you stop to look around, fresh green twigs are sprouting on trees and bushes.
Just like the saying April showers bring May flowers we can now wake up from our hibernation, shake off our weariness and take the opportunity to do a good spring-cleaning of our own body!
In order to get a bright and fresh start into spring I rely on so called superfood which provides my body with valuable energy sources. Besides quinoa and turmeric, chia seeds can be seen as superfood.
Thousands of years ago the ancient Maya culture in South America benefitted from the power of the small seeds. Yet it took ages until the superfood conquered our food plan.
Today chia seeds are experiencing a real food trend. You cannot only find them in health food stores but also in many supermarkets. They are often processed into a so called chia pudding or pastry and they are used as a topping on yoghurt, cereals and salads. You can also eat them on their own as a simple snack.
Translated from the language of the ancient Maya, chia means power. In fact these seeds functioned as helpful energy suppliers at that time. Chia seeds owe their title to the unique nutritional composition which can’t be found by this means in other food. 15 g of chia seeds include nutritionals like zinc, iron and calcium. Furthermore chia seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids (18%) and provide high amounts of proteins (20%). Both of them are important nutritionals for various processes in your body.
The plant of chia belongs to the family of the labiate family and to the genus sage plant. Its Latin name is Salvia Hispanica. That is because it originates in Mexico, which was a Spanish colonial territory when the plant was discovered by Western scientists in the sixteenth century. It can reach heights up to 1, 75 m and bears beautiful white or violet-blue blossoms.
Since these small heroes have a great soaking power (they can increase around more than the nine fold of their actual size), I always make sure to drink enough liquid when consuming them. By this means you can avoid constipation. I have a very simple and tasty alternative which already includes this important fact: It’s time for a juicy kefir-spinach-drink!
For this powerful drink you need:
- 80g chia seeds – get organic chia seeds here*
- 250g spinach
- 1 orange
- 200 ml of Kefir – my delicious organic Kefir waits here* for you
And here is how it works:
Peel the orange and cut it into rough pieces.
Put it into the mixer with the kefir and the spinach.
Then you add the chia seeds and stir well. Fill the drink into a glass and leave it for about 10 minutes so that the seeds can soak.
That’s it! Your juicy green power drink is ready to enjoy and will have you fit for spring!
