Today we are going to make an Aloe Vera kombucha smoothie – below you’ll find the delicious kombucha scoby recipe. But first, a couple of fun facts about the Aloe Vera plant.
The Aloe Vera plant feels at home in the desert regions of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The name Aloe comes from Arabic and means bitter, similar to the taste of the gel-like inner part of the plant. The plant looks like a cactus plant but it is part of the lily family – just like garlic or onion.
For this reason the plant is also known as lily of the desert. A special feature of the Aloe Vera plant is: it can survive without water for months. As the plant originates in desert regions it is able to produce its nutrients itself. The leaves function as the water storage. The plant draws on this storage during droughts.
The primary use of the plant is its gel and this is extracted from the water-storing tissue in the plant. The texture is slimy due to its polysaccharide substance and was most commonly used by the cosmetics industry. Today, there are also many foods that rely on the substances in the Aloe Vera plant.
An Aloe Vera plant on the windowsill
If you enjoy adding Aloe Vera to your drinks or spreading the gel onto a severe sunburn, then an Aloe Vera plant is ideal for your windowsill. The plant is very low maintenance, even without special gardening skills it is possible to see the plant flourish. It requires a sunny or semi shaded location and not a lot of water, it’s a desert plant after all.
But where can you buy a high quality Aloe Vera plant? Most commonly, you can purchase a plant at the weekly market or in a wholefood shop. A further possibility is to buy an Aloe Vera plant online*.
How to harvest the Aloe Vera gel
Always use only the outer leaves of the plant and make sure to cut neatly around the bottom of the stalk. Let the stalk rest so that the yellowish aloin can drain out, this substance functions as a defense mechanism against predators and can act as a laxative. Next, you skin the leaves and you are left with the translucent, slimy gel. If you don’t use up the entire stalk it can be kept in the fridge for a couple of days.
